Cardinal John Henry NewmanWonderful news! Today it was officially announced that Cardinal John Henry Newman is set to be beatified. Pope Benedict XVI will celebrate his beatification during His papal visit to the United Kingdom this September. Interestingly, Thomas Peters of the American Papist blog, comments that, Pope Benedict has not "personally celebrated a beatification before, so this is a very unique dispensation he is making on behalf of Catholics in England."

The Cardinal Newman Society was overjoyed upon hearing this announcement:

“We rejoice!” said CNS President Patrick J. Reilly. “Americans have a special love for Cardinal Newman, and his beatification has special importance for everyone involved with Catholic colleges and universities.”
